EL Fabspace is a digital fabrication laboratory which gives access to people to a range of digital manufacturing machines allowing them to turn their ideas into products and prototypes. It is located in the neighourhood of Beb Dzira, in the Tunisian capital and the idea for such a space comes from the need of local communities to have an open space to acquire knowledge and learn how to make almost anything and to create things by themselves. It inspires individuals on creation by providing them with the right environment, skills and resources. We spoke with Amira Larbi, the FabLab manager about the impact this venue and initiative makes to the local community.
i-responsible : What is the interest of the youth, civil society organizations and businesses about ElFabspace? Is How the El Fabspace is being managed?
EL Fabspace : For EL Fabspace, we face a new challenge and a new adventure on a daily basis. The day begins by organizing the space, machines and so on.. Then continuing by satisfying the needs of clients from producing their orders that were already sent by email and introducing new visitors to the space and the machines. Occasionally, we host trainings and workshops. Speaking about the processes we lead, EL Fabspace targets different sections of the society and makes creating an easier process for them by allowing them to make things cheaply and quickly. EL Fabspace is an open co-making space where ideas, machines and innovators come together to build socially innovative products. Still, it is not sustainable, different types of clients visit EL Fabspace on a daily basis with different interest and request each time.
i-responsible : What do you consider to be your biggest achievement? And on the other hand, what do you see as your biggest challenge ?
El Fabspace : I consider one of the most important achievements that we built on the success of our first fablab in downtown Tunis to open a new fablab in the Tunis business district catered for startups and corporations. What I consider my biggest challenge is democratizing digital manufacturing at Beb Dzira and help the local community in Tunis reach the high level of skills that I have noticed at the Lake area. There is certainly a potential for growth and development for EL Fabspace in Tunisia through its well-developed programs that targets different segments of the society.
i-responsible : What are your future plans? How we can inspire youngsters to be more socially responsible?
EL Fabspace : EL Fabspace is always working on a variety of programs that provide all individuals with opportunities to learn and create. Our main focus for the future is to have projects that empower local communities in general and youth in particular. Therefore, I would like to address to the young inspiring social innovators in Tunisia : their role in changing the country and making real impact is highly important and if they are looking for a space to embrace their vision and their innovative products they can head to EL Fabspace.
We can also inspire them by making the way of social innovation easier for them through programs and projects that help them improve their knowledge and acquire new skills. It is about empowering, guiding and sensibilizing them to see real impactful results.
