"Kopche" is a social initiative in North Macedonia which connects humanity, dignity, labor and ecology. It is a project developed by the Red Cross of Republic of North Macedonia - Red Cross Skopje, as a result of a long term work in the field of donating of clothes and its distribution among the less fortunate and socially vulnerable categories of citizens. On a yearly level, the Red Cross receives around 20 tons of donated clothes and helps over 2000 socially vulnerable and so called "people in risk" on the territory of the city of Skopje. The experience itself and knowing the needs of the people whom they help from one side, and the potential that they have from the other side has allowed them to upgrade their programme with new ideas, activities and initiatives, which allow for higher level of functioning which will mean satisfying more and bigger needs of the citizens in North Macedonia.
"Kopche" is a project made to offer a more efficient system of distribution of clothes for the people in need of them, allowing an easier access to clothes with low prices for all the citizens in order to keep the dignity of those with lower incomes, who do not ask for help and to allow employment of socially vulnerably groups of citizens and to contribute towards keeping and protecting the environment.
"We created, Kopche" with the idea of creating a place where we will encourage the practices of responsible donation, as well as the habits of responsible spending. We want to be part of a community where everyone values what he receives and everyone contributes to the community where he lives" says Aleksandra Boeva - Coordinator of "Kopche"
The story of this social initiative has started on the 16 th of May 2018. They have had a successfully year so far in which they have managed together to awaken the awareness of the people for buying second hand clothes and have helped raise the awareness about the ecological and social benefits of the activities Kopche has. They have donated, shared, shopped, created... all in contribution to a more environmentally and socially aware society! Making impactful changes slowly, but surely Angelina Ristova Andreeva who is a manager at "Kopche" explains: "We work daily to raise awareness for donating appropriate clothes and motivate citizens to donate what they no longer serve. The donors who leave Kopche with pleasure motivate us to be persistent in the work and give the appropriate piece of clothing in the right hands! " During the past, almost year, they have dedicated themselves on promoting habits of responsible spending and donating in the Macedonian society. The numbers speak for themselves. In its first year of existence the shop has been visited by around 5200 visitors. From those, in total roughly 2100 are registered as buyers and about 6000 pieces of clothes have been sold, including shoes and fashion accessories. In the shop are registered donations from more or less 1100 people and approximately 30 tons of clothes have been collected which the citizens have donated in "Kopche". Through the station for giving of free clothes are distributed around 10000 pieces to about 900 people from 180 families and in just about 10 institutions where people from the socially vulnerable categories are placed. All of their activities and updates have been shared through all of the months through their official channels on Facebook and Instagram where they have approximately 3000 followers.
"I believe in the potential and strength of every individual in creating positive social changes. And I think that we are the ones who should make that changes. When you buy, donate or volunteer in "Kopche" - you are doing something good for yourself, but also for the community. Be from those who change things for the better!" Aleksandra concludes.
