Employment in general, and particular youth unemployment is one of the hottest topics in each country across Europe and globally. Struggling unemployment, people come up with various innovative solutions, that often go from supporting self-employment, empowering youngsters to be active job seekers, inventing new jobs, that previously didn't exist in the world. Yet, a group of enthusiasts in France decided to support employment in a very creative way: by fostering learning from each other and mentoring through solidarity.
The Association Solidarités Nouvelles face au Chômage (SNC) or translated as "New Solidarity against Unemployment" for already 34 years is working on finding creative solutions to combat unemployment. The method that actively works in France and gives 62 % success rate understands engagement of volunteers who act as mentors / coaches of the job seekers, who can be of any age, gender, experience. Usually, the job seeker is paired with a volunteer that can support them in the job search process, in any extend: from improving their CV layout, bridging them to possible employers, giving them career guidance. Working in pairs, it helps the job seekers boost their confidence, get first hand advice and support, as well as to build up their network.
Gilles de Labarre, president of the Association explains the benefits of the model in the following way: "Thanks to this support method that has been proven and efficient, we have shown that it takes just few hours per month to put a person back to the road of employment".
The number of job seekers registered through the association goes up to 3800, that are supported by 2400 volunteers. Not only they have individual meetings, but they also meet in so- called solidarity groups that take place in a city / neighbourhoods. At these group meetings, also relevant local stakeholders are invited, where the volunteers, the job seekers and potentially, job providers discuss the challenges in the job search and try to find mutual solutions.
However, Solidarités Nouvelles face au Chômage does not stop the battle against unemployment here. Through different activities, they get engaged in local and national advocacy and lobbying processes with an aim to reach the relevant stakeholders and to raise their awareness of the unemployed people's reality.
